Periodontal disease can never be eliminated, only managed. The bacteria that cause gum disease are always in your mouth and if given the opportunity will re-infect treated areas. That is why proper maintenance is extremely important. Studies have shown that waiting six months between cleanings gives these bacteria too much time to do damage. Most of our patients have four maintenance visits per year usually alternating with their general dentist.
A periodontal maintenance appointment is similar to a cleaning at your general dentist but with some slight differences. Our area of concentration is directed more towards problems under the gum line than above. Root planing is performed where indicated in conjunction with routine scaling. Finally, periodontal pockets are irrigated with anti-bacterial agents. Periodontal maintenance visits include an exam performed by Dr. Gettinger.
