Root Planing
Root planing is the most basic of periodontal procedures. Root planing is often referred to as a "periodontal cleaning" or simply a "deep cleaning". Its purpose is to remove tarter or calculus from the root surfaces, deep under the gums, in areas of bone loss. In the early stages of periodontal disease root planing often is the only treatment necessary. When periodontal disease is more moderate to advanced it can reduce the infection but not eliminate it entirely. More advanced procedures are required.
