When bone loss is moderate to severe and periodontal pockets are deep, root planing (a deep cleaning) alone cannot adequately eliminate the infection. A surgical procedure is commonly employed in order to better reach and treat the active disease. It also allows the proper placement of medicines or bone graft material in an effort to rebuild or restore bone. The procedure is performed in the office using regular dental anesthetic.
