Inflamed Gums - Gingivitis

Gingivitis is probably the most common disease on the face of the earth. It is a fact that all human beings at some time or other develop gingivitis. But what is it?

The most common form of gingivitis is caused when plaque is allowed to accumulate at the gum line. The bacteria in plaque are toxic and lead to inflammation of the gums. Usually despite reading about the warning signs, most people never recognize that they have it. The good news is, when treated properly gingivitis is 100% reversible. The bad news is that if left untreated gingivitis leads to periodontitis, the disease that causes the majority of tooth loss in adults.

However when caught early, gingivitis can be reversed and bone loss can be halted. Treatment for gingivitis and early periodontitis usually consists of scaling, root planing, or both.
