Perio Problems
What Is Gum or Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease is a general term that encompasses several different diseases or conditions. All involve detrimental changes to gum tissue and bone that surround and support your teeth. This can involve inflamed or infected gum tissue (Gingivitis), bone loss or loose teeth (Periodontitis), or possibly gum recession (Mucogingival Defects).

In the Unided States periodontal disease is common affecting 30% to 50% of the population with 10% having severe disease. The majority of problems are caused by oral bacteria but smoking, diabetes, and family history may also have a role.

In addition a body of research has linked
periodontal disease with other systemic conditions. Gum disease can directly have a role in heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, and premature low birth weight babies.

The American Academy of Periodontology has an excellent risk assessment test. Click the highlighted link to determine if you are at risk.

Periodontists do not place fillings, crowns, or perform root canals. We do treat the disease that is the major cause of tooth loss in adults.
